Kenny Dalglish still has what it takes.Cup victories are a huge stepping stone .King Midas is popularly remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. This came to be called the Golden touch, or the Midas touch.
Lets have a quick recap to bring us up to speed.
For those of you who are too young to remember Bob Paisley succeeded Bill Shankly in 1974 following his unexpected retirement announcement. Shankly is credited with moulding Liverpool into the successful team they became but Paisley used the ideas in his own fashion to build a team that went on to dominate English football.
In nine years as manager between 1974 and 1983, Paisley took Liverpool to six League Titles, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup, three League Cups, five Community Shields and a UEFA Super Cup. He is often regarded as the greatest Liverpool FC manager of all time, due to his year-to-championship record.
When Paisley retired another member of the fabled Anfield boot room assumed the reins. Joe Fagin had a brief two year stewardship winning the European Cup in 1984 before retiring and handing over to Player Manager Kenny Dalglish in 1985.
Like Paisley before him Dalglish has the Midas Touch and as Margaret Thatcher later famously remarked about a politician – "yes he may be good but is he lucky?"
Dalglish has both attributes.
In his very first season at Liverpool in 1977 Dalglish made 62 appearances netting 31 times including scoring the winning goal in the 1978 European Cup final against Bruges. If you thought Gerrard was a Roy of the Rovers then Dalglish would leave you astounded.
Dalglish is an enigmatic winner. Success follows him in whatever he does. You just know that in a game of Subbuteo you would be on the end of a hiding.
The recent wins against the two Manchester clubs are no surprise to me. As a lifetime Liverpool supporter I fully expected Dalglish to bring success back to Anfield. He has that knack, that ability to win when it really matters.
If Dalglish was a tennis player he would be Djokovic.
Can you see Liverpool losing the Carling cup final to Cardiff? It may happen of course and I remember clearly Liverpool losing the FA cup final in 1981 to Wimbledon. Those garish white suits still grate on the memory.
The question is though when will Liverpool next win the title?
The problem for Dalglish is that so many other clubs have so much money whereas in Liverpool's heyday there really was only one club that could attract the very best players. It is going to be very difficult to bridge the gap but if anyone can do it King Kenny can.
