Murray edges closer to grand slam titleMurray edges closer to grand slam titleDjokovic edges out Murray in five set thriller.

Never mind that Murray lost this epic match, he clearly has the goods to live with the greats and it won’t be long until he wins his first grand slam title.

This was a match of absolute epic proportions and apart from Murrays’ slow start in the first set this was compulsive viewing for sports fans.

For a period in the third set it looked as though Murray was going to storm to victory but Djokovic is made of steel and he came back in a barrage of incredible forehands to take the fourth set and level the match at 2 sets each.

Murray lost this match because he had several very poor patches of play which lasted just long enough to undermine the sublime play that truly scaled the heights of the greats. He also needs to improve his second serve as by the fourth set Djokovic had started to eat it up and in one game Djokovic flashed four unanswered returns to break Murray to love in the fourth set.

Where does Murray go from here?

Cynics and snipers will contend that he doesn’t have the game or the mental steel to live with Djokovic, Federer and Nadal but this match proved that he has everything. His disappointing easy three sets loss in the same tournament last year should put it all in perspective.

Murray will no doubt be crestfallen at coming so close to winning here and falling right at the final hurdle but the reality is that he has made huge strides forward in twelve months and his aggression in this match was there for all to see.

When asked what made the difference from being a serial bridesmaid to bride Lendl claimed that he just kept knocking on the door and eventually the door started to open.

For Murray he surely cannot knock any louder without winning? His time will come and it will be much sooner rather than later.

For all those that took the Betfred offer of backing Murray and if Nadal wins you get your cash back then you are sitting pretty. With an extra days rest and an opponent who was forced to go the distance in a classic five setter you should get your money back.
