Price puts old lardy on the deck.Price puts old lardy on the deck.David Price is the Real Deal

Heavyweight David Price made an emphatic statement in his quest to wrestle the British and Commonwealth titles from Tyson Fury by stopping John McDermott in 73 seconds.

So says the Telegraph but I disagree. McDermott looked badly out of shape and ill prepared for this match with Price and it was lambs to the slaughter.

In contrast Price looks like a heavyweight champion in the making. He has the reach and the build and is a mobile fighter with a thunderous right hook. At 6'8 he is tall and rangy and has the complete toolset.

The Olympic Bronze medallist became the obligatory challenger after demolishing McDermott in 73 seconds of the first round in Liverpool on Saturday night. McDermott was outgunned from the first punch and was ill prepared for this onslaught.

Promoter Frank Maloney said that he would like Price to fight again in March, possibly on the same bill as Sergio Martinez's world middleweight title defence against British challenger Matthew Macklin at Madison Square Garden theatre on March 17.

Price has learnt his trade in steady if unspectacular fashion (until Saturday) and his steady ascent up the ranks has given him a 12-0 winning record. This fighter has the potential all right and the British and European belts will soon be within his grasp.

If he keeps up his winning streak then a contest with Tyson Fury will be on the cards in twelve months or so and that will be a box office draw.

Tyson Fury is undefeated and the commonwealth champion so to accept a match up against Price is going to be a big decision. Prices' camp want the fight but Fury can pick and choose his challengers. Fury struggled against Mcdermott and whilst you can never compare fighters over what they did against the same opponent, Prices' victory showed what a talent is emerging here.

It could be likely that Fury vacates his European and commonwealth titles in order to avoid a clash with Price and pursue more international fights to rack up the prize money.

If that happened then a Price V Fury showdown is not likely until the summer of 2013 and it would be a big moneyspinner for both fighters.
