You Dick Head. Watch Warnock get promoted again.Tony Fernandes has it wrong.Chairmen who press the panic button before time are all too common these days.
In some cases they can be justified particularly in Sunderlands case where they have appointed pure talent in the place of workmanlike mediocrity.
But Tony Fernandes has this one wrong and his ambition has blinkered his thinking. Sacking Neil Warnock was a big mistake.
You may say that results dictate everything in this business but I say that looking at where you have come from and where you are headed is a much better barometer to feel the overall temperature.
Eight games without a win is in itself of course not a good situation. But many clubs in the bottom half of the table will have records comparable with this at some point of the season and it’s not as if you are sacking someone who doesn’t have the experience of dealing with the situation. Neil Warnock is more than capable as he has proved time and time again.
The reason for panicking so early is of course the financial fair play rules which are due to come into effect in 2013. Whilst the rules are designed to stop clubs spending way more than their income would ordinarily dictate by way of a sugar daddy like Abramovich they will also make it more difficult for clubs to climb the league ladder as they will not be able to spend their way to the top.
Behind Fernandes decision is the thought process that if QPR drop back into the championship they may never get out again and staying in the premiership becomes more important than ever.
A quick look at Fernandes’ wealth on Wikipedia put’s it summarily at $330 million. More than enough to live comfortably and have a couple of homes and yachts splashed over the place but in premiership terms it’s not a lot. It’s roughly 200 million pounds leaving out the chump change.
Putting money into football clubs does not make business sense unless you have so much money that it doesn’t matter a jot what happens to your loose change. Football clubs for the very rich are their casino fix.
If Alan Sugar can’t make it work and Richard Branson isn’t involved then you can be sure there is no money to be made here.
What Warnock achieved in leading QPR to the Championship title was astonishing, with the board room fighting that was going on under Flavio Briatore.
When Warnock took over the club was on the verge of sinking into the first division. That they didn’t and managed to stay in the Championship was all down to Warnock.
In the summer Warnock reorganised the team and spent a paltry 3 million pounds to get the club promoted into the premiership. This sounds like the ideal candidate for a club that wants to stay in the premiership.
The decision to sack him stinks and whether or not QPR stay in the top flight you can be sure that the top man makes bad football decsions.
