As one of Muhammad Ali's biggest fans the news today that his trainer Angelo Dundee has died at the age of 90 is sad indeed.

Dundee worked with Ali for 20 years during which time he helped Ali through some of the greatest fights to live in boxing memory. The "rumble in the jungle", "thriller in manila" and "the fight of the century".

Would Ali have had the same amount of success in the ring without Dundee at his side? Unequivocally no. Dundee was a coach and trainer in the truest Rocky traditions. He was a mentor and friend and Ali will be sad today for his passing.

His son Jimmy Dundee said: "Thankfully, the whole family was with him. We have lost a great man. My dad led a wonderful life."

Although Dundee was well known as the trainer of Ali, he was also one of boxings most prolifigate trainers, working with both George Foreman and Sugar Ray leonard amongst many other successful boxers.

Dundee attended Ali's 70th birthday party last month and promoter Bob Arum said he had been planning to bring him to Las Vegas on 18 February for a charity gala headlined by Ali.

"He was wonderful. He was the whole package," Arum said. "Angelo was the greatest motivator of all time. No matter how bad things were, Angelo always put a positive spin on them. That's what Ali loved so much about him."

Dundee was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994.

He is survived by a son and daughter, six grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Spare a thought today for one of boxings greatest for in a world where inane celebrity talk get's hyped up as news headlines this event will probably go unnoticed on the main news channels.

But it will be marked by all avid sports fans as another link with sports illustrious past that has sadly passed away.

Although he never stepped into the ring we have lost one of sports true greats.
