Thierry Henry lights up Emirates

Thierry Henry returned to the stage where he was once king of everything he surveyed on the pitch and rolled back the years to produce a sublime finish that had Arsenal fans in raptures and Leeds supporters cursing his presence on the pitch once again.

This game looked to be heading for a dull 0-0 before the introduction of Walcott and Henry gave the home side the spark they needed to win the game.

Up until the substitutions Leeds had held their own and should have taken the lead after ten minutes however most of their play was confined to their own half with an occasional foray up field.

For Arsenal Chamakh and particularly Arshavin wasted chance after chance to score for the Gunners. Is this the same Arshavin I saw put four goals past Liverpool at Anfield?

That performance is now looking more and more like the pinnacle of Arshavins’ career and he just does not look likely to repeat the trick, even against Championship opposition.

Great sportsmen and women define their own greatness and Henry is no exception. How many footballers return to a club – albeit on loan, to a ground where they have a statue dedicated in your honour? Henry is truly a living legend in these parts.

With ten minutes to go and the game meandering to a draw Henry pulled out wide to the left of the Leeds area leaving his marker concentrating on play in front of him and when the ball was slipped through to him he bore down on goal, suddenly opened his body and passed the ball into the side netting on the far side.

This was a wonderfully composed finish and showed the labouring Arsenal strikers exactly how not to keep blasting the ball at the opposition keeper.

He may have lost some of his frightening electric pace but at Arsenal they have plenty of kids with pace to burn and Oxade Chaberlain also caught the eye with an impressive display.

Henry gained man of the match for his stunning goal but Aaron Ramsey gave a fine performance in midfield and was this armchair viewers deserved winner of the bubbly.
